TECH
for Innovation and Energy

70 years after America invented the integrated circuit, our global leadership in technology and energy is at a crossroads. U.S. innovation investment is plummeting while demand for energy to power our economy, driven by technology advances like artificial intelligence - is projected to increase by as much as 50 percent by 2040.

Advanced energy technology breakthroughs in areas like geothermal, and energy storage can power America’s leadership tomorrow. And current clean energy like wind and solar - domestic sources built by Americans - can power our leadership today, beating traditional sources in cost and speed to market.

But business can’t do it alone. Government must do its part.

Historic partnership between American innovators and government has positioned the US as a global technology leader. And our workforce is second to none - as long as it’s prepared and educated. To compete in the 21st century global economy, our public sector must remain an innovation funding partner and implement policy that ensures our private sector can develop and tap the energy sources of the future.

Seizing the Opportunity

As organizations representing America’s tech companies, innovators, advanced energy developers and buyers, investors and work force developers we are working together for America’s future through a new non-partisan Alliance - Tech for Innovation and Energy. Representing stakeholders from Silicon Valley to the Research Triangle, We are banding together to engage with State and Federal lawmakers to ensure a policy framework that makes America more innovative, more energy secure, and more competitive in a rapidly changing global marketplace.

Support American Innovation

Federal support for innovation and science is on the decline. National Science Foundation support for fundamental research in technology, computer science, engineering and other areas is at its lowest level in nearly four decades. The Department of Energy spending on energy research and development as a percentage of GDP  is half of what it was in 1979. Meanwhile, freezes and cutbacks in federal funding at American universities are sucking billions of dollars in badly needed support from research and development projects essential to keep America competitive in everything from nanotechnology to artificial intelligence.

With China and other countries doubling-down on research and innovation investments, federal and state lawmakers must reinvest in American innovation to compete in the global economy of tomorrow.

Build American Energy Security

To meet demand and keep costs down for businesses and consumers alike, we must increase the supply of made-in-America energy.  Right now, solar, wind and storage are the cheapest and fastest-to-deploy power there is, which is why these energy sources accounted for more than 90 percent of all energy added to the grid in 2024.

Even as America continues to invest in longer-term energy solutions our industry – and our economy – can’t wait. America’s technology industry needs more energy now, and the best way to meet rising power demand quickly is with immediately deployable solar, wind and batteries. State and federal policies must address permitting, tax and incentive policy and electricity transmission regulation to bring more electricity supplies to market quickly so America can remain competitive.

Develop a 21st Century American Workforce

Federal spending on STEM education has been cut by more than $650 million, leaving American students unprepared to meet the needs of today’s businesses. Global investments in cleantech are rising, but American workers are unprepared for the jobs and opportunities these investments will yield.

Federal and state lawmakers must reevaluate workforce development in America. We must properly address how we educate, attract and support the technology innovators of tomorrow.
