The Problem

Demand for Electricity

to power technology like artificial intelligence and data centers – is projected to increase by as much as 50 percent by 2040. Solar, wind and batteries are now the cheapest and quickest energy sources to deploy, yet the recent repeal of clean energy tax credits and federal funding support have dramatically reduced America’s ability to meet our growing energy demand.

Investment in U.S. Innovation

is plummeting, and now trails far behind China and the EU. National Science Foundation support for fundamental research in technology, computer science, engineering and other areas is at its lowest level in nearly four decades. Department of Energy spending on energy research and development as a percentage of GDP is half of what it was in 1979.

Our Workforce

is ill-prepared to meet the needs of a 21st century economy. While other countries are investing heavily in training for occupations to develop, manufacture and deploy battery, electric vehicle and critical materials technologies, the United States is falling behind. Federal spending on STEM education has been cut by more than $650 million. Student visa bans and immigration crackdowns have discouraged tomorrow’s innovators and inventors from coming to America, creating a technology brain drain that will severely hurt American competitiveness in the global marketplace.

The Solution

It’s up to the technology industry to ensure America’s continued  leadership in innovation and energy. But the private sector can’t do it alone. Government must do its part.

To keep America globally competitive in these areas, technology organizations and companies working across various sectors of the industry must work together to present a unified call for action at the federal and state levels.

To meet the moment, we are banding together and creating  a powerful new nonpartisan alliance Tech for Innovation and Energy (TECH-IE) that will push for federal and state policies at the intersection of innovation (cleantech and climate-tech); energy deployment (clean energy, energy efficiency and new advanced energy solutions) and workforce development (ensuring the trained workforce needed to compete in a 21st century economy)

This new coalition will unify the tech voice on issues that have broad bipartisan support. Together we will work with lawmakers from either political party to bridge the political divide and pass policies that make America more competitive and more innovative; advance our energy and national security; and improve our economy and our environment.

Relevant stakeholders from across the United States are welcome. We invite the following parties to join TECH-IE:

  • Tech industry associations and companies
  • Tech and cleantech incubators, accelerators and regional tech hubs
  • Cleantech workforce development organizations
  • Tech and cleantech impact investment groups
  • Sustainable datacenter and grid organizations
  • Clean energy developers and buyer organizations

There are no membership fees and no funding requests for participation in/with the alliance.

The Solution

It’s up to the tech industry to lead America back to leadership in innovation and energy. But the private sector can’t do it alone. Government must do its part.

To keep America globally competitive in these areas, technology organizations and companies working across various sectors of the industry – from big tech companies working on artificial intelligence and data center management to start-ups finding new solutions in energy, transportation and efficiency – must work together to present a unified call for action at the federal and state levels.

We propose the creation of a new nonpartisan alliance, Tech for Innovation and Energy (TECH-IE) that will push for federal and state policies at the intersection of innovation (clean tech and climate tech); energy deployment (clean energy, energy efficiency and new energy solutions) and workforce development (ensuring we have the trained workforce needed to compete in a 21st century economy)
